Report: Driver was going over 100 mph; Head-on crash killed teen, Erie woman

STERLING – A teenage driver who died April 21 in a crash that also killed another motorist west of town was traveling more than 100 mph at the time of the head-on collision in the middle of an intersection, police say.

The Illinois State Police Monday released details of its investigation into the crash that killed Michael McGarvey, 16, of Sterling, and Beverly Alls, 69, of Erie. Police have said alcohol did not play a part in the crash.

McGarvey, a sophomore at Newman Central Catholic High School, was driving  between 102 and 111 mph when he collided head-on with Alls’ eastbound vehicle at U.S. Route 30 and state Route 2, police said.

McGarvey was westbound on U.S. 30, when he swerved into the eastbound lane to avoid hitting a vehicle stopped at the intersection of state Route 2, which is a four-way stop. He then collided with Alls, a home caregiver on her way to a client in Rock Falls. She had just begun to accelerate after stopping.

Both victims died at the scene.

Alls was wearing her seat belt, police said, and McGarvey was not.
