Activities to help man with lung cancer

By SVN STAFF - news@svnmail.com

STERLING – A pair of benefits are planned this weekend to help a rural Sterling man with lung cancer.

Rob Hayes, 51, an assistant manager at the Dixon Wal-Mart, was diagnosed three months ago. He and his wife, Sue, have two sons, Dayton, a freshman at Sterling High School, and Dakota, a seventh-grader at Christ Lutheran School in Sterling.

Hayes has been undergoing chemotherapy; radiation treatments are next, said Kandra Cook, one of the organizers.

Saturday, there will be a pork roast dinner from 4 to 8 p.m. at Christ Lutheran, 2000 18th Ave. The cost is $10 for ages 9 and older. The meal will include pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, pasta salad, chips, a beverage and brownies.

There also will be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction featuring items such as golf outings, a painting provided by Ducks Unlimited, and Chicago White Sox tickets.

A 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the school, and although it’s too late to enter to play, spectators are welcome.

A deejay will perform both at the tournament and at the dinner.

Sunday’s benefit is a beanbag tournament with cash prizes at Long Shot Bar, 3312 W. Rock Falls Road, Rock Falls.

Registration is from 11 a.m. to noon, and the cost is $40 per team.

The tournament begins at 1 p.m.

In addition, there will be a taco bar – $6 for all ages – a 50/50 drawing, raffles and a bake sale.

For more information or to donate, call Cook, 815-590-0757, or Marisa Perales, 815-632-8825.

Ways to help

Donations to help Rob Hayes with medical expenses may be dropped off at Woodforest Bank in the Dixon or Sterling Wal-Mart.
