Keep uncovering local treasures
On the front page of the Mount Morris Times of April 16 appeared the headline “Names of war veterans uncovered at courthouse” (in Oregon).
Oregon has a bad habit. They seem to cover up all the worthwhile memorials that are placed to celebrate liberty and sacrifice of our founding forefathers and real art. Memorial Hall is one example.
The bicentennial mural by Harry Nurmet, who is still with us in Dixon, is another that never should have been painted over and covered up by another building in Oregon. Possibly Harry can guide anyone who cares enough to do something about it and repaint that mural for the benefit of all.
As Dr. Harry Spell stated at the presentation of the Friends of the Library in Oregon on March 30, we have treasures here that we are not aware of – whether art at the library, destroyed murals, or the latest of the uncovering of war veterans’ names at the courthouse. But we spend thousands of dollars for so-called art for the community.
How sad. Oh well, sooner or later, somebody will get the message.
