Oregon’s fifth sculpture chosen: Location for ‘Solar Reef’ yet to be determined

OREGON – Rockford sculptor Andrew Langoussis’ work, “Solar Reef,” is the winner of this year’s Community Art Legacy’s sculpture competition.

As such, it will be installed in Oregon in the fall. The honor also comes with a $2,000 prize.

“Solar Reef,” chosen over nine other entries, is a giant bronze circle, symbolizing the sun, surrounded by landscape elements such as fields, hills and structures.

It will be cast at no charge at Bronze Foundry in Mount Morris.

Its location will be chosen when the 7-by-8 work is finished.

“Solar Reef” is the fifth sculpture to be placed by the group in its “10 Public Sculptures in 10 Years” undertaking. 

The others, all in Oregon, are “From the Waters Comes My Bounty,” by Ray Kobald, at Kiwanis Park; “Agriculture, Mother of Civilization,” by David Seagraves, at the Ogle County Judicial Center; “Cornball,” by Howard Russo, at the Coliseum; and “Bountiful Bench,” by Christina Murphy, at the public library.
