Oregon woman killed in crash on Pines Road

By Vinde Wellsvwells@shawnews.comShaw News Service

A head-on crash on an icy road claimed the life of an Oregon woman Monday morning and critically injured a Chana woman. Ogle County Sheriff Greg Beitel said Eva Javorik, 79, died in the crash that occurred at 9:04 a.m. in the 4000 block of West Pines Road, west of Harmony Road. Marvella R. Kober, 60, of Chana, was injured in the crash and was airlifted by REACT helicopter to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon. Javorik's small white dog was with her in the car and also died in the crash. Beitel said the road was very slippery. "It appears the road condition was the contributing factor," Beitel said. Trees line the road where the crash occurred, he said, preventing the ice from melting from the roadway there. At the request of the deputies at the scene, a county highway truck brought road salt to the area. Kober was driving east on Pines Road and lost control of the Jeep she was driving when it hit a slippery spot in the road, Beitel said. The Jeep crossed the center line and struck Javorik's car head-on in the westbound lane. Both Kober and Javorik were wearing seatbelts. Pines Road was closed from Ridge Road to Columbian Road for almost 2 hours. Oregon Fire Department, the Oregon Ambulance, and the Illinois Department of Conservation Police assisted at the scene. Beitel said an accident occurred in the same vicinity, apparently just minutes before the fatal crash, also due to the slippery conditions. No one was injured in the that crash. An eastbound car driven by Jacob Koening, 19, of Dixon, went out of control on the icy road and rolled onto its top, coming to rest in the ditch on the north side of the road.
