Comet boys run to Oregon Open title
The Newman boys cross country team earned a big win Saturday, edging Winnebago in a tiebreaker to take the Oregon Open.
The Comets and Indians tied with 61 points, but Newman won the sixth-man tiebreaker because Winnebago brought only five runners.
Jake Trancoso (16 minutes, 25 seconds) and Dylan Reyes (16:50) were 2-3 for the Comets, after Winnebago winner Sean Smith (16:06). Dylan Harkness (16th, 17:55), Eric Farringer (17th, 17:59), Spencer Carlson (23rd, 18:29), and Adam Wiegman (26th, 18:38) added to Newman's scoring.
Bureau Valley was fourth, led by Tevis Mott (eighth, 17:34). Ryan Creegan's 10th-place finish (17:30) led fifth-place Oregon, and seventh-place Rock Falls was led by seventh-place Nick McFadden (17:20).
