Comet boys run to Oregon Open title

The Newman boys cross country team earned a big win Saturday, edging Winnebago in a tiebreaker to take the Oregon Open. The Comets and Indians tied with 61 points, but Newman won the sixth-man tiebreaker because Winnebago brought only five runners. Jake Trancoso (16 minutes, 25 seconds) and Dylan Reyes (16:50) were 2-3 for the Comets, after Winnebago winner Sean Smith (16:06). Dylan Harkness (16th, 17:55), Eric Farringer (17th, 17:59), Spencer Carlson (23rd, 18:29), and Adam Wiegman (26th, 18:38) added to Newman's scoring. Bureau Valley was fourth, led by Tevis Mott (eighth, 17:34). Ryan Creegan's 10th-place finish (17:30) led fifth-place Oregon, and seventh-place Rock Falls was led by seventh-place Nick McFadden (17:20).

Sterling 14th at Galesburg: Nathan Castillo led the Golden Warriors with a 59th-place time of 18:27 on the 5k course at the 15-team event at Lake Storey. Andrew McCormick was next for Sterling (72nd, 18:47), followed by Brennen Dir (95th, 19:46) and Max Eitelbuss (102nd, 20:05).

Girls Rockets 4th at Oregon: Rock Falls finished fourth at the 11-team Oregon Open. Danyelle Ehredt led the Rockts with a 10th-place finish (21:25), Savanah Davis was 14th (22:13), and Jessica Davis was 18th (22:13). Oregon finished fifth, led by fourth-place Lynea Axelson (20:43). Newman finished seventh, led by 13th-place Amanda Trancoso (21:29).

Sterling 7th at Galesburg: Carrie McPhearson (17th place, 21:08) and Carissa Apperson (20th, 21:27) led the Golden Warriors at the 13-team meeet at Lake Storey. Kaylen Palmer was next for Sterling (38th, 22:13), followed by Mary Rose Dukelow (50th, 22:31), Kathryn Gehrke (51st, 22:37) and Kelsey Scanlan (52nd, 22:47).

College Gillespie fifth at Waubonsee: Kate Gillespie of Sauk Valley Community College finished fifth Saturday at the Waubonsee College Invite in Sugar Grove. Gillespie finished in 20 minutes, 45 seconds. Kerstyn Richard was 10th (21:23), and Abby Wheeler was 20th (22:14). The Skyhawk men were sixth of eight teams, led by Chris Ratliff's 18th-place mark of 29:31.
