Time to write that letter to the governor

BY SVN NEWS SERVICE

Time certainly flies, doesn't it? How many people have you heard mention how quickly the summer went by? It's been at least several, we'd venture to guess. Here it is September already, and the days are moving inexorably toward autumn, with winter not far behind. For three marvelous parks in the Sauk Valley, time also is rushing by - the precious time left until they are closed by order of Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Hennepin Canal Parkway, Castle Rock State Park and Lowden State Park have less than 2 months remaining until the governor's closure directive takes effect. Some people might assume the governor isn't really serious about all this. They expect Blagojevich will rescind his order closing 11 state parks and 13 state historical areas at the last moment, so why be concerned? We don't believe the people of the Sauk Valley can afford to take such a risk. Residents need to inform the governor of exactly what these parks mean to them personally, and to the area in general, to persuade him to change his mind. We're gratified to see two local lawmakers step up and lead a letter-writing campaign to save the parks. State Rep. Jerry Mitchell, R-Sterling, and state Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, have made it clear they'll fight to keep these parks open. Now, it's up to local folks to do their part. Take some time this weekend to write your personal plea to the governor. Tell him about the good times you've had picnicking, fishing, hiking, biking, snowmobiling or hunting at these parks. Tell him about the wonder of the Black Hawk statue at Lowden; the majesty of the view from Castle Rock; the unique history and recreational opportunities along the Hennepin Canal. Tell him about the tourists who come here to enjoy the parks and pump dollars into the local economy. Then, tell him to spare these parks from his budget ax. Do it this weekend, then drop that letter off at the offices of Mitchell (100 E. Fifth St., Rock Falls) or Bivins (629 N. Galena Ave., Dixon) or mail it directly to Blagojevich (207 Statehouse, Springfield, IL 62706; or James R. Thompson Center, Suite 16-100, 100 W. Randolph, Chicago, IL 60601). Nov. 1 will be here before we know it. If nobody speaks up, the parks certainly will close. The region will reel from their loss. Time won't fly after that. It'll drag.
