Man's death a mystery

MILLEDGEVILLE - An autopsy Monday failed to reveal the cause of death of a 50-year-old man found Sunday in his truck, which was sitting in his driveway, engulfed in flames. There so far is no indication of foul play or suicide in the death of Alan L. Gregory, of Milledgeville, although nothing has been ruled out, Carroll County Coroner Matt Jones said. Toxicology results should be available within the next week, and an inquest to help determine a cause may be scheduled if needed, Jones said. "Certainly, the fire probably played a part in his death," he said, declining further comment. Officials also don't yet know what caused the fire. The state Fire Marshall's office is assisting with the investigation. Milledgeville Police and Fire departments responded to a call to the 100 block of Main Avenue shortly before 3 a.m. Gregory was in the burning cab of his pickup, about 30 yards from the house, Police Chief Jim Haag said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It took about 10 minutes to douse the fire. A neighbor reported the fire; no one else was at Gregory's home, Haag said. He was not sure how long the truck was burning, and nothing suspicious was found inside or around the truck, Haag said. Gregory is the son of Lyle and Shirley Gregory, of Milledgeville, and was a machine setup operator for mobile hydraulics manufacturer Sauer-Danfoss in Freeport. A memorial service will be held Friday in Milledgeville.
