Shipman takes the helm at Dixon Fire Department
DIXON - A changing of the guard at the Dixon Fire Department took place at Monday's City Council meeting, when Tim Shipman was sworn in as chief. Shipman replaces Dean Rhodes, who was honored at the meeting for 22 years of service with the city. Shipman said he hopes to build on the foundation established by Rhodes. Specifically, he wants to maintain a high level of training for every firefighter, maintain community projects such as going to local elementary schools to teach about fire safety, and continue to stock high-quality equipment. Also Monday, commissioners gave preliminary approval to changes to the Central Business District tax incremental financing district, including: n Taking on a large-scale downtown renovation. n Raising the current amount of spending allowed on the district from $5.5 million to $11 million. Of that, up to $500,000 would pay for studies, surveys and engineering fees; up to $500,000 for marketing; up to $5 million for buying property; and up to $5 million for construction. n Allowing money generated by the Central Business District TIF to pay for projects in the Riverfront TIF. The ordinance will be available for public viewing for 30 days, then the council will vote on it.
