Area towns to light up the sky with fireworks

Amboy There will be no fireworks because of cost. Fireworks still are scheduled, however, for the Depot Days Festival, Aug. 21 - 24. Dixon 9:30 p.m. Sunday on the river. Fireworks will be launched from the south side of the Rock River near the 900 block of West First Street. Synchronized music will be played on River Country 101.7 FM. Spectator seating will be allowed on both sides of the river. Mount Morris 9 p.m. Friday at Worley Field, behind Mount Morris Junior High School, 105 W. Brayton Road. The fireworks will cap the town's annual "Let Freedom Ring" festival. They will be preceded by a parade at 2 p.m., and the Kable Concert Band, which will perform at 8 p.m. at the school. Prophetstown Because of recent flooding at Prophetstown State Park, the fireworks show has been canceled and the 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held at Prophetstown High School from 8 a.m. until early evening July 4. For more information, call 815-537-2926 . Sterling Dusk Saturday at Westwood Sports Center, 1900 Westwood Drive. Parking is $5 per vehicle. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. The Sterling-Rock Falls Jaycees will sell refreshments. No alcoholic beverages are permitted on the park property, and no personal fireworks or sparklers are allowed. Make out donation checks to the Sterling-Rock Falls Jaycees. The rain date is Sunday. Walnut After dark Sunday at the swimming pool on South Main Street. This show is the finale to Walnut's 2008 Independence Day Celebration, which begins Thursday. Events include a softball tournament, beer garden, pancake and sausage breakfast, 5K run, volleyball tournament, car show, antique farm and tractor show, J&M Amusement games and rides, Cub Scouts soapbox derby, and sawmill demonstration.
