
Today's sports shortsBY SVN NEWS SERVICELOCAL TENNIS Newman delayed at IHSTCA state meet Inclement weather Friday put a halt to the Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association girls dual tennis tournament. Newman, which was scheduled to play at 8 a.m. against Effingham St. Anthony, will play today starting at 8 a.m. at Illinois Central College in East Peoria. The Comets will play a total of three duals today to determine their place among the top eight teams in IHSTCA's Class A. KSB Classic registration open Registration is underway for the 24th annual KSB Tennis Classic, to be held in conjunction with the Dixon Petunia Festival. Forms may be picked up at the Dixon Park District office, 804 Palmyra St., or the Emma Hubbs Tennis Courts. LOCAL BASKETBALL Rock Falls girls camp coming up The Rock Falls Lady Rockets basketball camp will be held June 23-27 at Tabor Gymnasium. Players entering grades 3-12 are eligible. Sessions will be from 8 to 9 a.m. (3rd-4th graders); 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. (5th-6th); 10:45 a.m.-noon (7th-8th); and 12:30-2 p.m. (high school). LOCAL SPORTS River Bend boosters to meet The River Bend athletic boosters and administration will hold a question and answer session at 6 p.m. Monday at the River Bend district office, 1110 Third St., Fulton. Extracurricular and activity fees for the 2008-09 school year will be discussed. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Mendenhall leaves Illinois, enrolls at ISU NORMAL - Running back Walter Mendenhall has made his plans to transfer from Illinois final, enrolling at Illinois State as a grad student and joining the football team. Redbirds coach Denver Johnson says Mendenhall has started working out with the team. Mendenhall left Illinois after getting only limited playing time. He carried the ball four times for 57 yards last season. His brother, Rashard Mendenhall, led the Illini and the Big Ten in rushing. The Steelers drafted him in the first round of this year's NFL draft. NHL Blackhawks' Kane named best rookie CHICAGO - Patrick Kane, the NHL's rookie of the year, insists he didn't win a $500 bet with Blackhawks teammate Jonathan Toews over who would take the Calder Trophy. That's because Toews said he knew better than to entertain such a wager. Kane beat out Toews and Washington's Niklas Backstrom for the award, which was announced Thursday night. Kane, the eighth Chicago player to win the Calder, led the Blackhawks in scoring with 72 points. |
