Sterling girls win again

BY SVS STAFF The Sterling girls basketball team earned its third straight road win with a 51-40 victory over Harlem on Saturday in Machesney Park. The Golden Warriors (6-2) held Harlem to 13 first-half points. Ashley Hammelman led Sterling with 15 points, Niki Rivera scored 10, and Kaitlin Loos added eight. Amboy 70, Indian Creek 36: Paige Lovgren made six 3-pointers en route to a game-high 22 points at the Amboy Shootout. Jessica Walter addded 17 points and Jaimi Machen scored 10 for Amboy (3-5). Boys Basketball Indian Creek 60, Amboy 52: Tyler Berogan led the Clippers (0-7) with 15 points, and Travis Nauman scored 13 in a loss at the Amboy Shootout. Sterling Christian 53, Cedar Rapids FFAI 51: Silas Hammelman's basket with three seconds left provided the Trojans' winning margin in the championship of the Tri-State tournament at Galena. Hammelman also made a free throw to tie the score with 10 seconds left and finished with three points. Devin Goodeill had 17 points and 11 rebounds for SC (9-2), and Ethan Kruse added 13 points and seven rebounds. Sterling Christian 57, Tri-State 52: Devin Goodeill and Ethan Kruse scored 18 points apiece to lead the Trojans in the Tri-State semifinals. Prep Wrestling Polo splits in Orion: The Marcos beat Kewanee thanks to a tiebreaker, but fell to Orion. Polo tied the Boilermakers 39-39, but a team scoring rule states that the team who scores first in a majority of the matches wins. Josh Garnhart (135 pounds), Scott Powell (140), Zach Truckenmiller (171) and Jake Peterson (215) all won by pin for the Marcos, and Drew Cheatham (152) won a decision. Polo lost to Orion 45-30. Powell, Bumsted and Drew Scott (145) recorded pins, and Jake Garnhart and Peterson won decisions. Girls Bowling Sterling wins Anel Dura tournament: Kayla Betz's 548 three-game series led the tournament and helped the Golden Warriors place first in the seven-team field in Freeport. Betz bowled a 1,047 in six games. Dixon third at Oregon Invite: Kristina VanDyke led Dixon with 1,124 pins. Emily Baal was Oregon's top bowler with 1,005. Boys Bowling Dixon sixth at Oregon Invite: Jeff Walls was Dixon's top bowler with 1,122 pins, and Chad Bahr added 1,107.
