DIXON – The Lee-Ogle Transportation System soon will start work on a $1 million maintenance garage and wash bay, as well as a parking lot expansion.
Earlier this summer, Rockford-based Sjostrom & Sons Inc. was awarded the contract for the project, which will cost a bit north of $1 million and will be paid for by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The work includes constructing a 3,064-square-foot maintenance garage and wash bay, and adding 26 parking spaces to the LOTS main office, 210 E. Progress Drive, in Dixon.
The agency plans to break ground Monday; the work likely will take about 4 months.
LOTS, which is funded by a combination of state and federal grants along with a local match, provides more than 80,000 rides a year and services more than 5,000 people throughout the area, primarily for medical, employment and education purposes.
In fiscal year 2019, LOTS provided more than 83,400 rides in the two counties.
In addition to the local public transit system, LOTS administers the Greyhound Connect route along Interstate 88, between Chicago and Davenport, Iowa, with stops in Naperville/Aurora, DeKalb, Rochelle, Dixon and East Moline.
In late January, LOTS also began administering a new Greyhound Connect route between Chicago and Danville, encompassing stops along Interstates 90, 39 and 74. The stops along the new route include Chicago, Elgin, Rockford, Rochelle, Oglesby, Normal, Champaign and Danville.
