Free events to celebrate those in recovery coming up

DIXON – September is Recovery Awareness Month, and a variety of free events celebrating and bringing awareness to those recovering from substance abuse are on tap through Sinnissippi Centers.

First up, the Sinnissippi Recovery Celebration will feature an open AA speaker meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday at Sinnissippi Centers Inc. Substance Abuse Treatment Services, 325 state Route 2. A picnic supper follows at 5 and guest speakers at 6 p.m.

On Sept. 22, a Sinnissippi Recovery Home open house will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at 922 W. Washington Ave. It's a family-friendly event designed to raise awareness of and community involvement for those in recovery. There will be games and food, and at 6 p.m., a speaker will share a personal story of recovery.

Finally, the Voices For Recovery Picnic and Memorial Walk will be held Sept. 28 in the Lions shelter at John Dixon Park, 515 N. Galena Ave.

The day begins with a picnic at 4 p.m., then at 6 p.m., local stakeholders will give an update on area recovery efforts and there will be a speaker.

At 7 p.m., participants will walk to Haymarket Square at Highland Avenue and Third Street in remembrance of those lost to substance abuse. Once there, The Catfish Dogs band will perform.
