New vets coming to Happy Tails; hours to expand

ROCK FALLS – After several months with no dedicated veterinarian for its public animal clinic, Happy Tails Humane Society has contracted with five new doctors who will start next month, and a sixth whose start date is yet to be determined.

Since opening its clinic 5 years ago, two veterinarians have come and gone, and there has been a bit of a struggle to find one dedicated to the wellness program, so the clinic now will contract with veterinarians, mostly from larger cities such as Rockford or the Chicago suburbs, to work in the clinic at least 1 day a week, Director Donald Czyzyk said.

The nonprofit also is in the process of speaking to three other vets. The goal is to have the clinic open at least 4 days a week, but “if five more doctors hop on, we can do 5 days a week,” Czyzyk said.

“Each one of these veterinarians bring a different specialty,” and will be able to provide referrals when needed, he said.

For example, one of the new hires is affiliated with a Rockford clinic that specializes in bone disorders.

For now, Happy Tails Wellness Clinic, inside the animal shelter at 1408 McNeil Road, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
