ROCK FALLS – Now that the Sterling side of the Avenue G bridge has been reopened, motorists soon will have to deal with the bridge’s closing on the Rock Falls side.
The Illinois Department of Transportation has notified the city that bridge work in Rock Falls is scheduled to begin Sept. 16 and continue until late November.
The Sterling side of the bridge, in the area over Wallace Street and the railroad tracks, was closed June 4 to replace deteriorating deck joints. The bridge on that side was reopened July 26, but some work under the bridge still is being finished.
The repair work is part of a nearly $500,000 bridge rehabilitation project that also includes repairs to the bridge piers and slope walls under the Sterling portion.
Rock Falls city officials are holding out hope that work on that side can be completed ahead of schedule, but IDOT initially estimated that work on the Rock Falls side would start July 20.
The city asks that motorists be patient and extra cautious when traffic is backed up.
