Williams survives scare at Wimbledon
Slowed by a balky ankle, trailing by a service break in the third set of her Wimbledon quarterfinal, Serena Williams appeared to be in trouble Tuesday against an opponent playing the tournament of her life.
Lifting her play a much-
needed notch down the stretch to grab the last three games, capping the comeback with her 19th ace – at 121 mph, no less – Williams reached the semifinals at the All England Club by gutting out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over 55th-ranked Alison Riske.
Also advancing to the semifinals were seventh-
seeded Simona Halep and eighth-seeded Elina Svitolina, while 19th-seeded Johanna Konta – the last Brit in the women’s singles draw – was upset by unseeded Barbora Strycova 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Halep beat Shuai Zhang 7-6 (4), 6-1, and Svitolina defeated Karolina Muchova 7-5, 6-4.
Cubs’ iconic gloves up for sale
Bidding has opened for the gloves Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo used during the final out of the Cubs’ 2016 World Series championship, and the auction house selling them thinks they’ll go for $750,000 or more.
Bidding opened online Monday at goldinauctions.com, and will conclude Aug. 1 at a live auction during the 40th National Sports Collectors Convention at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont.
Bryant’s glove – which the third baseman used to field Indians batter Michael Martinez’s grounder – is a tan, right-handed, 12 1/4-inch Rawlings model PRO200-6K and features his autograph in black marker as well as messages he wrote on the outer webbing: “2016 World Series Champs” and “Last Out!!”
Rizzo’s glove, which the first baseman used to catch Bryant’s throw, is a left-handed, 12 3/4-inch Rawlings model PROCMHO that’s black with blue laces. Rizzo signed his name in silver marker on the palm and added “2016 World Series Game Used” and “Game 7 last out.”
Daly will not play in British Open
John Daly is free to ride a cart during the week of the British Open – just not at Royal Portrush.
Daly’s manager said Tuesday he is likely to play the Barbasol Championship next week in Kentucky, and the two-time major champion with osteoarthritis in his right knee already has been granted a cart to use in the PGA Tour event.
The R&A announced Tuesday that Daly had withdrawn from the British Open “due to a medical condition.”
