STERLING – A new parking lot for Franklin Elementary and repairs to Sterling High and Challand Middle schools are among about $2.6 million in repairs being made this summer in the throughout the Sterling School District.
At a special meeting Monday, the Sterling school board approved a bid of $234,570 from Twin City Construction to redesign the parking lot at the southeast corner of the school at 16th Avenue and 25th Street.
The work will be paid for by the 1 percent Whiteside County sales tax passed in 2014. Work will begin in early June and be completed in late July.
The nearby Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints stopped allowing overflow parking on their lot this year, so vehicles are parking farther away along the road, or along curbing in the existing parking lots.
“We’re grateful that they let us use it for as long as they did, but since we were informed that the can’t use it anymore, we’ve had to make plans to renovate that parking lot.” Director of Finance Tim Schwingle said.
The bid for the parking lot was $197,570; $37,000 to fence the playground brings the total to $234,570.
Various repairs on the third floor of Sterling High School, in the athletic locker rooms and outside Roscoe Eades Stadium also were approved at the cost of $1.685 million; electrical upgrades at Homer Musgrove Fieldhouse also are part of the plan.
Vestibule installation and cafeteria door replacements at Challand Middle School; gym door work at Jefferson, Lincoln and Washington, and siding replacement at portable classroom structures at Lincoln and Washington were approved for $488,000.
Rockford Structures of Machesney Park will make the multischool repairs, and Holian Industries of suburban Spring Grove will work on $174,000 worth of asbestos removal from various rooms throughout the district. That work will be paid for with leftover money from the 2018 bond issue.
The Sterling Schools board next meets at 6 p.m. April 24 in the Sterling High School Library, 1608 Fourth Ave.
