ROCK FALLS – Area motorcycle enthusiasts with a soft spot for children and a love of the open road are invited to attend this year’s first meeting of the Sterling/Rock Fall chapter of St. Jude Rides.

The local group of 35 to 40 members, which spends the year riding and enjoying one another’s company while also raising money for seriously, sometimes fatally ill children, is looking for more riders.

It holds its first meeting to plan this year’s events at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at Days Inn, 2105 First Ave. Members meet the fourth Monday of the month after that, same time, same place.

The year’s activities culminate in a 2-day ride in September to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, where riders from the local chapter and those from Peoria, Princeton, Des Moines, Iowa, Kansas City, Missouri, and Nashville and Dyersburg, Tennessee meet up to drop off the money they’ve raised.

In 2018, the Sterling Rock Falls chapter raised $59,320, all while having a darned good time: Some of its events included a bowling fundraiser, a night of dinner, drinks and comedy, a blues and funk concert featuring The Jimmys, and rides, auctions and raffles.

All told, the seven chapters were able to give $920,300 to St. Jude, which never charges for treatment, food, lodging and travel, and has helped hundreds of Sauk Valley children, either at its Memphis facility or its Peoria affiliate.

To volunteer, attend a meeting, or call coordinator Gary Fulrath, 815-499-6332.

Maybe you don’t ride, but you know a good thing when you see it: If so, sponsors always are needed.

Monetary donations also can be mailed to Fulrath, P.O. Box 398, Sterling, IL 61081; make checks payable to St. Jude Rides.

You also can find St. Jude Rides Sterling/Rock Falls to Memphis on Facebook or go to stjuderides.org for more information on the local chapter and the national organization.
