STERLING – Opinions differ on traffic roundabouts, but most people seem to have a strong one.
Sterling residents will have an opportunity Monday to get in on the discussion about a roundabout planned at LeFevre Road and Lynn Boulevard, near the Halo Branded Solutions headquarters.
The city has planned an informational meeting at 4:30 p.m. at City Hall, prior to the regular City Council session. Engineers from city consultants Mead & Hunt will be there with project drawings and to field questions.
The idea behind a roundabout is that having no traffic signals or stop signs will speed up vehicle flow. But for some drivers, traveling counterclockwise in a circular intersection seems a bit unsettling.
Halo has been the driving force in the LeFevre/Lynn roundabout. It has been growing rapidly, and when the promotional products company was preparing to build its new corporate headquarters, extra acreage was bought in anticipation of another wave of expansion. The roundabout is part of street realignment that needs to be done in the area to accommodate increased traffic flow.
The city also plans to build a second roundabout, this one in the Wallace Street area. The Halo roundabout is first on the list, however, because the city must wait for some other pieces to fall into place before the riverfront road realignment can be done.
“We had really hoped to do the work by Halo this season, but we’ve done the engineering for the roundabouts this season and then we can start the work right away next spring,” Mayor Skip Lee said.
Engineers also are lined up for a presentation at the council meeting. Willett, Hofmann & Associates will join City Manager Scott Shumard and Public Works Superintendent Brad Schrader in leading the discussion on street maintenance funding and planning. Included will be how the city chooses the streets it decides to work on.
Also on the council agenda is the swearing-in of new police officers Bradley Jasutis, Spencer Morrissey and Madison Howard.
The City Council next meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the first-floor Council Chambers at City Hall, 212 Third Ave.
A public informational meeting about the roundabout project at LeFevre Road and Lynn Boulevard will precede the council meeting, beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room at City Hall.
