Teacher + music add up to a show

DIXON – Dixon High School math teacher Ryan Hoffman will play piano and guitar and sing a variety of songs, from rock to showtunes, from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the bookstore and coffee shop at 202 W. First St.

Pop on by for some music

STERLING – Sterling Municipal Band’s 25th annual Winter Pops concert will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Abiding Word Church, 806 E. Lynn Blvd.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for the free concert.

Interim co-directors Annette Hackbarth and Cheryl Neumann, both long-time band members and area music educators, will share the podium for the performance which will kick off the band’s 2019 season.

Spontaneous Combustion will provide entertainment during the intermission.

In celebration of local art

DIXON – The 15th Regional Survey of Art, which showcases area artists and trends, opens Saturday at The Next Picture Show, 113 W. First St.

More than 90 original works by 34 artists will be on display through Feb. 23.

A reception celebrating the exhibit and artists begins at 6 p.m. Jan. 11 with music by Chuck and Bev Kearns of Oregon.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is free; donations are welcome. Find it on Facebook, go to thenextpictureshow.org or call 815-285-4924 for more information.

First Fridays in Mount Morris

MOUNT MORRIS – The First Fridays Open Stage music show returns to Mount Morris Moose Family Center, 101 Moose Drive.

Registration begins at 6:30 p.m. and the show at 7. Each musician or band performs for 15 minutes. Instruments are acoustic and a professional sound system is provided. The music will include country, bluegrass, blues, gospel, folk and soft rock. Food and beverages will be sold.

Admission is by donation. All musicians and spectators are welcome. Food and drink are available.

Celebrating the Epiphany

DIXON – St. Paul and Immanuel Lutheran churches present “Follow the Star,” an Epiphany Hymn Festival, at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 421 S. Peoria Ave.

Praise Bands from each congregation will sing, accompanied by guest organist Karen Larson of Mount Morris. Refreshments also will be served.
