Sterling’s Dykeman honored by AVCA

Sterling coach Dale Dykeman was named to the inaugural class of the American Volleyball Coaches Association High School Region Coaches of the Year.

Dykeman is one of 40 coaches across the country to earn the honor, and one of four from Region 6. A total of 10 regions represented the 50 states.

Sterling won the IHSA Class 3A state championship last Saturday, capping a season in which it went 41-1.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Hawkeyes fly past Huskies in 2K final

Luka Garza scored 18 of his 22 points in the first half, and Iowa beat Connecticut
91-72 in the 2K Classic championship game on Friday at Madison Square Garden.

Garza was named MVP of the tournament.

Iowa improved to 3-1 all-time against UConn. It was the first meeting between the schools since Iowa’s 70-68 win on Nov. 11, 1999, at Madison Square Garden.

Tyler Cook had 26 points, and Connor McCaffery added 19 for the Hawkeyes (4-0), who upset No. 13 Oregon in the semifinals Thursday.

Jalen Adams led the Huskies (3-1) with 20 points.

UConn coach Danny Hurley was ejected with 1:44 left. He received his first technical foul earlier in the half.

MLB

Orioles tab Astros’ Elias as next GM

The Baltimore Orioles have hired Houston Astros assistant GM Mike Elias to be their general manager, the team announced Friday.

The Orioles also gave Elias the title of executive vice president.

Elias has overseen amateur scouting for the Astros since 2012. He received the assistant GM title in 2016, when he also took the lead on Houston’s player development and minor league operations.

One of Elias’ first tasks
will be hiring Baltimore’s
next manager after Buck Showalter was fired following a 47-115 season.

Rays’ Snell selected for random drug test

On Wednesday, Rays starter Blake Snell was named the winner of the American League Cy Young Award. The Mets’ Jacob deGrom won the honor in the National League.

Coincidentally, Snell was randomly selected to be drug-tested on Friday.

Snell isn’t the first player to call into question the supposed randomness of MLB’s drug-testing program. Earlier this year, Snell’s former teammate, outfielder Carlos Gomez, said that he doesn’t believe it’s random and, in fact, targets older players and Latin players. The Brewers’ Eric Thames was repeatedly drug-tested after getting off to a blistering start in 2017.
