Brian Stewart is trading in a spot at the state House for the 45th District Senate seat.
Stewart, R-Freeport, won about 63 percent of the vote Tuesday against Shabbona Democrat Dave Simpson – 49,121 to 29,126. That's according to unofficial election results, with 92 percent of precincts reporting by press time.
He replaces state Sen. Tim Bivins, a Dixon Republican and former Lee County sheriff, who is retiring after 10 years in the seat.
Simpson is a lumber yard manager in DeKalb and was making his first bid for public office.
Stewart was appointed to the 89th District in 2013, replacing retiring Rep. Jim Sacia. He was re-elected in 2014 and 2016.
The 61-year-old is a former Freeport City alderman and Freeport Township trustee, a retired Stephenson County Sheriff’s Department sergeant, and is CEO of Stewart & Associates Inc. and 20 other businesses in northwest Illinois that employ almost 500 workers.
The 45th District includes all or portions of Lee, Ogle, Whiteside, Carroll, DeKalb, JoDaviess, LaSalle, Stephenson and Winnebago counties.
