Greenhouse taking root at Dixon High

DIXON – Work on Dixon High School's newest classroom has started.

A 576-square-foot greenhouse is being built on the north side of the school, near the student parking lot and east of the cafeteria.

The greenhouse will cost about $14,000, which includes the outer shell, wood benches, potting soil, fertilizer, plumbing electrical and heating.

It's being paid for by a $25,0000 grant from Growing Opportunities through America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education program, which asks farmers nationwide to nominate their local public school district for grants to help enhance STEM education

The school will incorporate Sauk Valley Community College's horticulture program into its curriculum, Superintendent Margo Empen said.

"The greenhouse is going to enhance hands-on learning with our new agriculture programming," she said.

Work on the greenhouse began Oct. 30 and will be completed late November, building and grounds director Kevin Schultz said.

"After the greenhouse is enclosed, work on the inside like plumbing, heating and electrical will start, and will take about 4 to 6 weeks to complete," Schultz said.
