Connor James Bland, 17, of Sterling is one of Sterling High School’s September Students of the Month.
Favorite class: Scientific research with Mrs. Chris Browne because as a class we get the opportunity to create many different contraptions and machines. It’s a lot of fun!
Least-favorite class: English. Nothing against Ms. Alysen Newton, but I just really don’t like English.
Favorite teacher: Hands down, Mrs. Margaret Nickerent.
School activities in which you participate: Track and field, cross country, Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society and the mentor program.
Civic, church, volunteer or activities in which you participate: I do a lot of volunteering in Student Council and National Honor Society.
Do you have a job? I work at the Brandywine helping set up events and as a food runner.
How would you describe your group of friends? Diverse; all of my friends are different from each other.
What will you do after high school? Still undecided, but I’ve been thinking about studying at Iowa State University.
What is something you learned in high school you think you’ll never use? Probably some math concepts that I’ve already forgotten.

What’s one thing in your life you can’t do without? I couldn’t live without the USA.
What is your advice for surviving high school? Meet and get to know everyone you can – teachers you don’t have, kids who aren’t in any of your classes, everyone.
If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be? A longer lunch period.
What scares you? Raccoons scare me; they’re mean.
If you could try any job for the day, what would it be? Either an OB-GYN because it would be really intense and exciting delivering a baby; or a zookeeper, because animals are awesome.
If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would it be? Rome, Italy, to visit the Vatican.
