FREEPORT – A free informational program for active-duty military, veterans and their families will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Read Park Pavilion, 1200 Park Lane Drive.
The eighth annual Stand Down and Welcome Home program, sponsored by the Veterans Assistance Commission of Stephenson County and Freeport office of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs, is designed to provide state, local and national benefit information, with a focus on alternative care and mental health treatment.
Information on counseling, employment, vocational rehabilitation, housing resources and chiropractic services will be provided, along with help with VA and Social Security benefits claims. Clothing and haircuts will be available.
New this year is a 2-mile veterans walk. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. at Read Park; walkers will be taken to Taylor Park, 900 E. Stephenson St., where the walk will begin.
Comfort dogs from Lutheran Church Charities’ Kare-9 Military Ministry of Northbrook, a therapy horse from Gaited Journeys Equine Therapy of Rock City, games for adults, and a petting zoo also will be on site.
Copies of DD-214 forms are required for identification.
