Safety first: High waters turns Running of the Bears into drawing for the prizes

Schedule bumped up a day; tickets still available

STERLING – Because the recent rains have the Rock River running high, the Running of the Bears fundraiser for Special Olympics Illinois, which was to be held Saturday morning along the river between First Avenue Bridge and Lawrence Park, is off – kind of.

Plans were to dump floating bear toys off the bridge and watch them race toward the lower dam to the eastern tip of Lawrence Park, with prizes awarded for the first three bears to cross the plane of the tip.

For safety’s sake, prizes still will be awarded, just via a drawing that will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Sterling Police Department, 212 Third Ave.

The first ticket drawn will win first prize, a trip to Cancun. Second prize is a family membership to Westwood Fitness &Sports Center in Sterling, and third prize is a 55-inch color TV.

Even the last bear in wins a prize – free tacos for a year.

You must be at least 18 to buy a ticket; they will be sold right up until the very minute before the drawing.

The cost is $5 for one, $20 for five, or $100 for 30. They are available at SPD; Sterling Main Street, 318 First Ave.; and Sauk Valley Chamber of Commerce, 211 Locust St.
