Comets falter, ‘Catz move up in AP Poll

The Newman Comets dropped two spots to No. 4 in the Class 2A AP Poll after a loss to Orion.

The Chargers are now tied with Maroa-Forsyth for the top spot in 2A.

Eastland-Pearl City moved up a spot to ninth in Class 2A ahead of Friday night’s road game against 1A No. 8 Forreston.

Sterling remained No. 6 for a second straight week in 5A.

Milledgeville is receiving votes in 1A for the third straight week, while Lena-Winslow is still No. 1.

Byron is the top team in 3A for a third straight week, while North Boone dropped three spots to 10th after losing to Genoa-Kingston last week.

Dixon’s Dallas set to be Bears’ honorary captain

Dixon school resource officer Mark Dallas will be the Chicago Bears’ honorary captain at Monday night’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, and locals can help him celebrate the honor.

Ed Miller, owner of the Shamrock Pub, is renting a bus and has 24 tickets to the game up for sale.

Miller has end zone tickets in Soldier Field’s Section 200 for $115; tickets in Section 338 for $169, and tickets 10 rows up on the 50-year-line for $212.

The bus ride, with Dallas on board, costs $40 more. It will leave from the Dixon Walmart parking lot around 4 p.m. Monday, Miller said.

Those interested can text Miller at 815-440-2194; the tickets are being sold first-come, first-served, cash only.

Dallas was given the honor for thwarting a school shooting last May.

Packers claim Burton, place Davis on IR

The Green Bay Packers claimed cornerback Deante Burton off of waivers from the Atlanta Falcons, placed wide receiver Trevor Davis on injured reserve.

The team also signed cornerback Will Redmond to the practice squad and released safety Marwin Evans from the practice squad.

Burton signed with the Falcons as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Kansas State in 2017. He spent his entire rookie season on Atlanta’s practice squad.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Wessels competing in Sr. Amateur

Salley Wessels of Mount Morris carded an 11-over-par 82 and is in a four-way tie for 15th place after the first round of play at the Illinois State Senior Women’s Amateur Championship being held at Metamora Fields Golf Course.

Other locals in the field are Kristie Pultorak of Dixon (87) and Mimi Boysen of Dixon with 90.

The 54-hole tournament continues today and
Thursday.

Sale lasts one inning in return from DL

Red Sox starter Chris Sale was activated from the disabled list Tuesday.

Sale struck out two in the first inning against the Blue Jays, but was pulled after 26 pitches.
