Dixon’s cross country team stamped itself as a force to be reckoned with by taking top honors in the Class 2A portion of the First to the Finish Invitational on Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria.
The Dukes finished with 105 points, well ahead of runner-up Kaneland, which had 148. Rounding out the top five in a 55-team field were Burlington Central (267), Rockford Christian (274) and Sycamore (286).
Collin Grady led Dixon with a time of 15 minutes, 30 seconds, good for fifth place. He was followed by Brock Drengenberg (8th, 15:41), Christian Seagren (15th, 15:59), Andrew Lohse (25th, 16:11) and Cadyn Grafton (52nd, 16:31).
Sterling was 31st with 816 points. Isaiah Moorman led the Warriors with a time of 16:12, good for 27th place.
On the Class 1A side, Rock Falls was sixth as a team with 316 points. The top five were Stanford Olympia (163), El Paso-Gridley (176), Urbana University (190), Eureka (220) and Elmwood (240).
The Rockets’ Dawson Smith was fourth overall in 15:41.
Rock Island 4, Sterling 0: The Golden Warriors (0-4-2) ventured to Rock Island and were shut out by the Rocks.
Oregon 11, South Beloit 2: Josh Sitze had four goals and two assists to lead the Hawks to a home win against the SoBos.
Also for Oregon (2-8-1), Jonny Acosta had three goals and two assists, Joey Gelander had three assists and a goal, Liam Dickson-Harriett had two goals, Eli Rufer had one goal, and Ryan Lazansky added an assist.
Warriors 13th in Rockford: Carter Schlegel carded a 97 to lead Sterling to a 13th-place finish at the 17-team Brad Fowler Invitational at Aldeen Golf Course in Rockford.
The Warriors had a 416 team total. DeKalb won with a 324.
Dixon was 15th with a 432 total. Ryan Lawton had a 101 for the Dukes.
The medalist was Freeport’s Devan Stewart with a 5-over-par 77.
