TROY, Ohio – Edward L. McGrath, 73, of Troy, passed away Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, at the Hospice of Miami County Inpatient Unit in Troy.
He was born June 29, 1945, in Oregon, to Nicholas and Genevieve (Grennan) McGrath. Ed attended Loyola University. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Troy. Ed came into this world with a disease of the colon, but persevered throughout his childhood. As a teenager, he became ill and survived a brand new surgery, and was on his way to a normal life. As he became healthier, he progressed through his career beginning at entry-level with the Admiral Corporation in Chicago. He later advanced to becoming a buyer and plant manager, and ultimately as vice president/general manager of Simclar Corporation in Dayton. In addition, his beautiful voice was heard singing many Irish ballads on St. Patrick's Day, especially as a tribute to his mother. And lastly, he sang "Ave Maria" at his son Nick and Meghan's wedding in 2015. His outgoing personality, humor and story-telling put a smile on many a face. He loved life, his family, his beloved Notre Dame and all his cats over the years, especially his buddy, Fluffy.
Ed is survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara (Hilgefort) McGrath; seven children, Shelley McGrath of Phoenix, Tricia McGrath of Tucson, Arizona, Kathleen (Matt) Dunlavey of Kettering, Ohio, Patrick (Tracy Martz) McGrath of Columbus, Ohio, Melissa (Larry) Drake of Miamisburg, Ohio, Nicholas (Meghan) McGrath of New Bern, North Carolina, and Christopher McGrath of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren, Kyle (Arran) Dunlavey of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Logan Dunlavey of Kettering, Ohio, Natalya Drake of Miamisburg, Maddex Drake of Miamisburg, and Ireland McGrath of Columbus; one sister, Mary Noble of Dixon; two brothers: John (Linda) McGrath of St. Charles, and Joseph McGrath of Dixon; two brothers-in-law: Anthony (Julie) Hilgefort of Burton, Michigan, and John (Karen) Hilgefort of Versailles, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James McGrath.
