STERLING – Josephine R. Slater, 85, of Sterling, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018, at her home.

She was born April 6, 1933, in Harmon, the daughter of Edward and Agnes (Mekeel) Blackburn, and was a 1951 graduate of Community Catholic High School in Sterling.

She married Russell Slater on July 5, 1954, in Sterling. He died March 13, 2008. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, and donated food for funeral luncheons. Josephine was a member of TOPS, KOPS No. IL 825 for 49 years.

Survivors include four daughters, Rose Ann (Tom) Latta of Amboy, Christine (Ron) Heide of Sterling, Colleen Slater of Rock Falls, and Lisa (Kim) Buckingham of Rock Falls; her daughter-in-law, Marnie Slater of Sterling; 15 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sons: Edward, Richard and Michael; a daughter, Karla; one granddaughter, Hollie Hodge; and one great-grandchild, Carmeron Folkers.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, and the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sterling, with the Rev. Bruce Ludeke, officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling.

McDonald Funeral Homes is handling arrangements.

A memorial will be established.
