Have a good Venetian Night

DIXON – The fifth annual Venetian Night returns to the riverfront from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

The European-themed event will feature living statues, costumed jugglers, Venetian mimes, stilt dances, mask performances, magicians, and Venetian musicians, as well as face painting, a photo booth, Venetian cuisine and outdoor bar service.

Fireworks will finish off the night at 9 p.m., after an LED glow stick and hoop performance.

Call 815-284-3361 or find Dixon Chamber & Main Street on Facebook for more information.

The fine art of straw

MOUNT MORRIS – Artists have been clutching at straws, and the public can see their work this weekend when the third annual U.S. National Straw Sculpting Competition opens at 6 p.m. Friday on the Encore! Mount Morris campus downtown.

The sculptures will be on display through Aug. 26. Go to strawusa.com for more information.

While you’re in the village, you can enjoy other weekend activities: Artful Threads, a fiber art exhibit, will be at Sandstone Gallery, 1222 S. Wesley Ave., Friday and Saturday; Illinois Rail will perform bluegrass jams from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Friday Night Jamboree in the bandshell. You also can pop by Pinecrest Community, 414 S. Wesley, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help the senior living community celebrate its 125th anniversary; there’ll be bounce houses, an ice cream social, music and more.

Car show cruises into Polo

POLO – The Chamber of Commerce’s 29th annual car show parks itself downtown, rain or shine, from 8 a.m to 4 p.m. Saturday. Cars, trucks, and motorcycles of all makes, models, and years will be on display.

Awards for the Top 50 will be presented at 3 p.m.

Other activities include a swap meet, trivia competition, music, and a 50-50 raffle.
