Carroll 4-H fair draws near

MILLEDGEVILLE – The Carroll County 4-H Fair starts at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 2 with clothing judging, in the 4-H Building at Carroll County Fairgrounds, 28374 Milledgeville Road.

Setup night begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 1 in the 4-H building; registration is due by July 30. All 4-H'ers and their families are asked to help sweep, move shelves, hang banners, and to bring brooms, buckets, and other cleaning supplies. Call 815-244-9444 to register.

Other activities by date are:

Aug. 4: 9 a.m. General products, foods judging and Cloverbud exhibits; 2 p.m., introduction of the 2018-19 4-H Ambassadors, Champion Award presentations and Cloverbud promotion. 4-H members selected to show at the state fair will meet.

Aug. 5: 2:30 p.m. – registration for the 3 p.m. Ag Olympics; 3:30 p.m., poultry judging in the ag barn; 5 to 7 p.m.. The Carroll County 4-H and Carroll County Livestock Feeders will sell hamburger meals from 5 to 7 p.m. in the 4-H building. The cost is $5 and includes hamburger, chips, cookie bar and water.

Aug. 6: 8 a.m., beef breeding judging, and beef bucket calf, beef feeding and beef carcass class awards; 9:30 a.m., cat judging at the pavilion; 11 a.m., rabbit judging; 12:30 p.m., sheep judging; 1:30 p.m., goat judging; 3:30 p.m. swine judging at the east end of the poultry barn; 5:30 to 7 p.m., sandwich supper for swine families and livestock auction bidders; 7 p.m., livestock and small animal auction in the swine show ring.

Aug. 8: 8:30 a.m., horse and pony judging at the 4-H Horse Arena; rain date is Aug. 11.

Aug. 9: 9 a.m., dairy judging in the dairy ring.

Aug. 11: 7 to 8 p.m., all exhibits released.

A children's fair will be open next to the 4-H building. Children can see, pet and learn about traditional farm animals, do six farm chores, and take home a pack of prizes and information. Hours are from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 8 and 10, 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 9, and 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11.

Bids can be placed from Aug. 4 through 6 p.m. Aug. 11 for a silent auction of themed baskets such as Star Wars, car detailing, and arts and crafts. Winners can pick up their baskets from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 11 in the 4-H building. All proceeds will go to the Carroll County 4-H Foundation.

Sign up for school nutrition course

AMBOY – The University of Illinois Extension will offer “The ABCs” of School Nutrition,” free school food service professional standards training from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 30 at Amboy High School, 11 E. Hawley St.

The workshop will provide 6 hours of United States Department of Agriculture Professional Standards continuing education credit for the 2018-19 school year. Training topics include saved by the breakfast bell, positive communication, quality standards, portioning food, and customer service, merchandizing and food presentation.

Food protection course offered

OREGON – The Extension will offer a Certified Food Protection Manager Course from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 21 and from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Ogle County Extension office, 421 W. Pines Road.

Students must attend both dates; a photo ID is required. The cost is $100 and includes book, educational materials, exam and lunch.

The class meets the 8-hour course work and examination required by Illinois for Food Safety Manager certification or recertification.
