Contrary opinions to the president’s are completely fine

A Sauk Valley Media reader wrote May 16 that she doesn’t know “about the rest of you,” and “... when do we have the authority to ridicule the leader” regarding cartoons and articles ridiculing the president of the United States.

I, being one of the “rest of you,” encourage Nancy Lenhart to familiarize herself with the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

The absence of our First Amendment would not allow hardly any opinion and, in particular, one within a theocratic regime that would be in opposition to Lenhart’s god. That God put our president in office is fanciful, but I respect her “right” to express her opinion.

That our newspaper posts opinions reflects the most vital cornerstone of our democracy. At the same time, the value of the free press and freedom of expression reveals that improvements are needed in citizens’ knowledge of their own American history and government.
