Newman makes short work of Mustangs in road victory

Comets rain down hits, runs

MORRISON – With temperatures plunging and occasional showers pelting the ground, Newman’s baseball team wanted to make quick work of Morrison on Friday.

Mission accomplished.

The Comets scored in every inning, including a 10-spot in the top of the fifth, and rolled to an 18-1 win against the Mustangs in a Three Rivers Conference crossover contest.

Newman (6-2) rapped out 12 hits, and also took advantage of wildness from Morrison pitchers Noah VanZuiden and Dillon Still, who combined to issue nine walks and hit three batters.

“A bunch of people on our team did a great job today of stepping up when we needed runs,” Newman’s Luke Olson said. “We really wanted to get out of here because it’s cold. Everybody just did their job and stuck to the game plan, which was to get out of here as quick as we could.”

Travis Williams paced the Newman attack with a two-run triple to key a three-run third inning, and a two-run double in the fifth, when the Comets blew the game wide open.

Newman put together seven hits with three walks and a hit batsman to score 10 runs in the top of the fifth. Williams, Brycen Bartel and Nick Clevenger each had two-run hits in the inning.

Newman hit up and down the lineup against the Mustangs (1-7). Landen Vesley was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI; Drew Ackman was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored; Clevenger was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and three runs scored; Bartel was 1-for-2 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored; and Gehrig Koerner was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Ackman (1-0) got the win. He allowed one run and three hits in four innings, with five strikeouts.

“I don’t think I brought my best stuff today,” Ackman said, “but I was able to hit my spots, and I had really good defense behind me.”

Morrison got its run in the top of the first. Allan Meinsma led off with a single, and later scored on a dropped third strike.

Reilly Dolan had two of the Mustangs’ three hits.

VanZuiden (0-1) took the loss. He allowed five runs (four earned), three hits, three walks and hit two batters in three innings.
