DIXON – State Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, on Tuesday endorsed Paula Meyer in her bid to win the Republican Party nomination for Lee County treasurer.
Meyer, who has been Dixon’s finance director since 2012, is opposed in the March 20 primary by Lee County Deputy Treasurer Melissa Lawrence. There is no Democratic Party candidate.
Treasurer John Fritts announced in September that he won’t seek re-election after more than
2 decades in office.
“Paula Meyer is an exceptional candidate whose qualifications include more than 22 years of implementing government accounting policies and procedures,” Bivins said in a statement.
“Today the public is demanding that government officials practice transparency in how tax dollars are being collected and spent,” Bivins said. “Five years ago, Paula took on the daunting task of putting into place new accounting procedures for the city of Dixon in the wake of the embezzlement of more than $50 million.
“Paula has been able to help the city of Dixon by writing and implementing accounting practices that have increased transparency and improved the city’s finances.”
Bivins, who represents the 45th District, is not seeking re-election after serving for 10 years.
