STERLING – Barbara Jeanne Reed Osborn, of Sterling, died Saturday, March 3, 2018.

Barbara Jeanne Reed Osborn was born Oct. 9, 1923, in London Mills, the sixth of 14 children of Bertha and Cyril Reed.

After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Illinois University, she married Philip Shanton Osborn in 1946. Barbara also earned a master’s degree in library science from the University of Colorado and a Master of Arts degree in instructional technology from Northern Illinois University. Her teaching career of 30 years included 20 years at Sterling High School as library director.

Soon after retiring in 1987, Barb and Phil became volunteers in Mission, serving for 2 years at Alice Lloyd College in the Eastern Appalachians of Kentucky.

Barbara’s survivors include her three sons, David, Paul (Linda), and Daniel;
grandchildren, Abigail (Timothy) Osborn-Ward, Philip (fiancé Macy Frye) Osborn, Jacob Adams, Hilary (Grant) Wahlheim, Hayley Osborn, Samuel Osborn, and Andrew Osborn; and one great-grandchild, Robert Reed Ward, born Feb. 17, 2018; two brothers, Warner (Jane) Reed and Rudy (Mary) Reed; three sisters, Greta Kumlander, Marcia (Robert) Little, and Alicia (Robert) Aden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Philip; sisters, Elizabeth and Virginia; brothers, Quentin, Willard, Hubert, James, Philip, and Clayton; and daughters-in-law, Ellen and Joyce. 

A memorial service will be April 21 at First Presbyterian Church of Sterling. The time of the service will be determined later.

A memorial has been established to First Presbyterian Church of Sterling, for the church library or the church music fund.
