The news is full of opinions on whether or not teachers should carry guns.
As a parent, considering today’s climate, I feel that the better prepared personnel are at school, the safer our schools are for students and staff.
What I don’t believe is that the intention of the proposal is to FORCE teachers who aren’t interested in carrying a weapon to be trained to carry and use a gun at school.
I’m sure there are educators out there who already have a FOID card and a gun at home who would consider this measure. Common sense tells me that would be strictly voluntary for those individuals that might want to participate in concealed carry at schools.
I am sure there are many teachers who would feel helpless hiding in their classrooms, huddled with their students, waiting for rescue, wondering if they’re next, or will help come too late.
If I were a teacher, I’d want the option to defend myself and my students, or at least fight back.
For those who would want to participate, for goodness sake, don’t identify educators who would carry a weapon at school because it would place a target on that teacher by the murdering, gun-wielding individual to seek them out first.
For those who oppose having an armed teacher, I pray they consider this as a hopeful deterrent to another school shooting. Potential shooters would have to take into consideration the fact that someone in the school might just shoot back at them!
