Randal J. Gabaldon II, 18, of Polo is Polo High School’s December Student of the Month. His parents are R.J. Gabaldon and Amy Sikyta, and he has two sisters, Emily and Grace.
Favorite class: Woodshop. I like the freedom of building anything we want.
Least-favorite class: Gym. All we do is run and lift. No fun games.
Favorite teacher: Jeff Bumsted. He treats his students like gold. He teaches such valuable skills.
School activities in which you participate: Football, baseball, Spanish Club, and Varsity Club
Civic, church, volunteer or other activities in which you participate: I volunteer at our schools concession stand for games.
Do you have a job? I’m a lifeguard at Polo Pool and work at Kohl’s as a sales associate.
How would you describe your group of friends? Rowdy and exciting
What will you do after high school? I plan to major in finance at the University of Illinois.
What is something you learned in high school that you think you will never use? The 10 million muscles on the muscle test
What kind of music are you listening to? Rap. J. Cole, Kanye, Jaden Smith, and Migos
Is there a celebrity whom you look like, act like, or feel like? I feel like Elon Musk, because I have all of the best ideas.
What’s the one thing in your life you can’t do without? Family
What is your advice for surviving high school? You do you. Real friends will accept that.
If you could change one thing about your school, what would it be? That we would have a longer lunch period so that I don’t have to rush eating my chicken.
What scares you? Losing. It slows down all of my plans and goals.
What’s something about you that nobody knows? Nothing, I’m a open book.
If you could try any job for a day, what would it be? President of the United States
If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would it be? London. It’s so full of history.
What is the last good book you read? “The Autobiography of Gucci Mane.” I liked it because it showed all of the setbacks that people endure on the way to success.
Who is your hero or role model? My dad. He works harder than anyone I know, but he’s still always happy.
What do you think your life will be like 10 years from now? I hope to be at the top of my game and moving in the positive direction.
What is your life’s philosophy? You can’t get better without doing something about it.
