John I. ‘Jack’ Mershon Sr.

OREGON – John I. “Jack” Mershon Sr., 82, longtime Oregon resident, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford.

He was born Nov. 6, 1935, in Franklin Grove, the son of Harold and Ruth (Chaon) Mershon. He was a 1953 graduate of Steward High School and a veteran of the Army. He married Barbara Bates on April 5, 1958, in Oregon. Jack was employed in finance and banking, based in Oregon, until retiring in 2001. He was an active member of Oregon United Methodist Church, serving on many committees, Oregon VFW Post 8739, and Oregon Lions Club. He served on the Oregon School Board for 9 years, and Rock River Center Board of Directors for many years. Jack enjoyed golfing, yard work, family vacations, and reading, and was a Green Bay Packers fan.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Oregon; son, John (Michelle) Mershon Jr. of Forreston; daughters, Deborah (Michael) Gaziano of Tucson, Arizona, and Dana (Robert) Ryder of Loves Park; grandchildren, John Mershon III, Melissa (Tim) Barnes, Danielle (John) Parli, Michael Mershon, Deanna (James) Robbins, Darcey (Kathryn) Ingram, Madalynn Mershon, Isabella Gaziano, and Meredith Ryder; six great-grandchildren; brother, James (Donna) Mershon of Byron; sister, Marilyn Alderks of Rochelle; and special family, Roger and Elizabeth Mershon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Melvin, Walt, Robert, and Charles.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home in Oregon. A second visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, and the funeral at 11 a.m. Monday at Oregon United Methodist Church, with Nancy Crandall as lay officiant.

Memorials in Jack’s name may be made to Oregon United Methodist Church.
