OREGON – A 16-year-old Mount Morris boy is facing three felonies after police say he accidentally shot a friend in the abdomen early Monday in an Oregon apartment.
The boy, whose name is not being released, was charged Tuesday in Ogle County Juvenile Court with aggravated discharge of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and reckless discharge of a firearm, as well as possession of a firearm without a FOID card, a misdemeanor, State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said.
He is being held in the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles, and has a hearing Jan. 18.
Allen Hyenga, 20, also of Mount Morris, still was in intensive care Tuesday afternoon at KSB Hospital in Dixon, Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan said.
The boy was displaying the semiautomatic .45-caliber handgun when it fired around 2:20 a.m. One of the residents of the apartment in the 400 block of West Washington Street called 911, DeHaan said.
The gun may have been taken from a vehicle in Oregon within the last year, and police are looking for its owner. Anyone with information is asked to call Oregon police, 815-732-2803, or Ogle Lee Crime Stoppers, 888-228-4488.
