Mount Morris man accidentally shot in the abdomen

Police looking for owner of stolen handgun

OREGON – A 20-year-old Mount Morris man is hospitalized after a 16-year-old, also from Mount Morris, accidentally shot him in the abdomen with a stolen semiautomatic .45-caliber handgun, Oregon police said in a news release Monday afternoon.

The shooting happened around 2:20 a.m. Monday in an apartment in the 400 block of West Washington Street. The boy was displaying the handgun when it fired; one of the apartment residents called 911, Chief Darin DeHaan said.

The unidentified man is being treated at KSB Hospital in Dixon; police did not have his condition, but did say that he was alert and that they were able to interview him, DeHaan said.

Charges are pending.

The gun may have been taken from a vehicle in Oregon within the last year, the release said. Its owner is being sought; anyone with information is asked to call Oregon police at 815-732-2803.
