With flu outbreak comes visitor restrictions at local hospitals

It’s flu season, and once again CGH Medical Center in Sterling and KSB Hospital in Dixon not only are advising people to get an annual flu vaccine, but also are placing temporary restrictions on visitors in an effort to curtail its spread.

In the past several weeks, there has been a rise in the number of patients in the CGH Medical Center Emergency Department and at outpatient clinics because of the flu, which is easily and most often spread by coughs or sneezes, officials said in a news release Thursday.

As a result, both hospitals are banning visits by children younger than 18, except n special cases with approval from the patient’s health care team, and are limiting visitors to 2 adults per patient at any time.

They also are asking people to stay home if they have a fever, cough, sneeze, runny nose, sore throat or other symptoms, and those who do visit to use hand sanitizer and/or wash their hands frequently, especially when entering and leaving patients’ rooms.
