On November 1, myself and 139 other (mostly Vietnam Veterans) got the most incredible welcome home we could ever imagined.
I can only inadequately say thank you to Lee County Illinois Honor Flight, Illinois Police Charitable Association, and all who made this possible.
Not that we weren’t treated well in this area when we came home, because we were; friends and family and so many others were glad to see us.
Like so many other soldiers from World War II, Korea, and young soldiers from the Gulf Wars (Iraq and Afghanistan), we just threw away or put in the back of the closet anything we had from that time.
We didn’t want to talk about it, most of us for 30-40 years.
The send off and return at Quad City International Airport in Moline with soldiers, kids, dogs, and adults was heartwarming.
The reception at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C. truly was incredible.
The sidewalks, as far as we could see, were lined with kids and adults, singing patriotic songs, shaking our hands and thanking us. It truly was wonderful!
I never thanked you, Dixon, for the privilege of being a school teacher here for more than 30 years.
The people I worked with and the kids, now adults, of this community are the best.
Thanks so much for letting me be a part of so many of your lives.
