Republican tax bill is nonsense

Buried within the Republicans’ recent proposed tax scam is a little gem that would allow churches to give campaign contributions to the candidate of their choice.

Conservatives, never one to actually think about the consequences of the things that they want to see happen, are sure to think the idea of political free speech for our religious institutions is awesome. Only it’s not.

When a foreign entity (Red China or OPEC) or a foreign individual (Kim Jong-un or Vladimir Putin?) donates $1 billion to a small town’s Southern Baptist church, they’ll still think it’s awesome when that foreign money ends up going into a candidate’s pocket? There are a lot of Saudi princes who have a lot of money to throw around.

Keep in mind, it’s no longer the “foreign” money once the church takes receipt. It’s the church’s, and it’s green.

This hypothetical example I came up with is just one of the problems posed by this tax bill nonsense.

The United States gives billions of dollars to both the Egyptian government and the Israeli government. What is preventing those governmental bodies from turning around and sending some of that money right back to the United States, via American churches, to promote candidates who will send them even more of our tax dollars?

Answer: nothing.

Folks ain’t thinking this through. This horrible tax bill would be the end of our republic.
