WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Katherine M. Butcher, 83, of West Des Moines, formerly of Rock Falls, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, at St. Luke North Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

Katherine was born Sept. 27, 1934, in Stuttgart, Arkansas, the daughter of Wesley and Elizabeth (Beggs) Paige. She married Howard L. “Butch” Butcher on Dec. 24, 1957, in Sterling. He preceded her in death on July 21, 2011. Before her marriage, she worked at General Electric Co. in Morrison. She was a former member of 16th Avenue Church of Christ in Sterling.

Before moving to West Des Moines, she was an avid bowler for the women’s league at Blackhawk Lanes in Sterling. She adored nature and its wondrous beauty. She had a talented green thumb, enjoyed gardening, and brought out all the natural beauty in everything she touched. She was an avid fisherman and often out-fished us all. She was simply thrilled, and laughed hysterically each time she caught a fish.

Mom was never selfish, always very passionate about helping others; always stepped up to defend her beliefs in her family and God. She always objectively brought forth suggestions and offered her assistance if it could make someone else a better person. (Reap what you sow) She also was a loving, caring, and awesome Mom and Nana. Her love was and always will be totally unconditional. She loved all of us with her full heart and soul.

Survivors include one daughter, Denise R. (Jim) Manon of West Des Moines; two sons, Daryl W. Butcher of West Des Moines and James Estel Cash of Smarr, Georgia; one stepdaughter, Gretchen (Lyle) Bush of Morrison; one stepson, Greg (Wanda) Butcher of Belle Aire, Florida; eight grandchildren: 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dean (Troy) Mitchell of Stuttgart, Arkansas, and Shirley (B.R.) Van Houten of Hazen, Arkansas.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter in infancy, Debra Butcher; and three sisters, Evelyn Smith, Louise Ray, and Jean Owens.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, and the funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls, with Mr. David Schmitt officiating. Burial will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.

A memorial to St. Jude Children’s Hospital has been established.
