Local Roundup: Warriors fall in season opener

Comets cruise, Marcos roll; Sterling & Rock Falls win two on the mats

Sean Gingrich hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points for Sterling in a 74-42 loss to Rock Island on Wednesday in the Rock Island-Milan Boosters Thanksgiving tournament.

Aiden Shore finished with six points, eight rebounds and three blocks for Sterling.

Randy Tucker drained five 3s and scored 20 points to lead the Rocks.

Oregon tournament

Newman 76, Christian Life 37: Travis Williams paced a balanced attack with 16 points as the Comets crushed the Eagles.

Devon House and Cade Gorzny added 12 points apiece for Newman.

Michael Hart scored 10 points for Christian Life.

St. Bede 43, Oregon 41: Jackson Funfsinn had 21 points and Luke Sanchez added 15 as the Bruins edged the Hawks.

Trey Woolsey scored 19 points for Oregon, and Dalton Hermes added 11.

River Ridge

Fulton 49, Pearl City 45: The Steamers survived a late rally from the Wolves in their season opener at Hanover.

Fulton led just 5-4 after the first quarter, but broke out to a 25-12 lead at halftime. Pearl City (0-2) outscored the Steamers 19-10 in the fourth, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Tyler Bruggenwirth finished with a game-high 19 points to lead Fulton. Cody Sanderson pitched in nine, Kyle Schipper had eight, and Nate Wierema added seven.

Lucas Petersen led the Wolves with 15 points.

AFC tournament

Polo 78, LaMoille-Ohio 41: The Marcos exploded out of the gates with 34 first-quarter points on their way to a rout of the Lions in Ashton.

Justin Young led Polo with 16 points, Brady Webb had 13, and Lane Hopkins added 11.

Domonic Moore had nine points for LaMoille-Ohio.

Amboy 49, Hiawatha 45: The Clippers outscored the Hawks 12-7 over the final 8 minutes to pull out a win.

Justin Hart led Amboy with 18 points, and Mitchell McLaughlin added 11.

Dane Snow had 11 points for Hiawatha.

Bureau Valley 63, Putnam County 30: The Storm handled the Panthers in the season opener for both teams at Wethersfield High School.

Girls basketball

Erie 41, Stillman Valley 34: After a 21-1 first-quarter advantage, Erie held on for its first win in the final round of the Sauk Valley Shootout at Tabor Gym in Rock Falls. 

Erie (1-4) scored the game’s first 18 points, and held Stillman Valley (1-4) without a field goal for the first 13 minutes, 59 seconds of the game. 

Skylar Steimle led Erie with 14 points, and Whitney Bramm added 11. Stillman Valley, which outscored Erie in each of the final three quarters, was led by Georgia Ballard’s 15 points and Anna Broksi’s 12 points.


Warriors win two: Sterling opened its season with a pair of wins in East Moline, 36-33 over the host Panthers and 54-21 against Marian Catholic.

Earning wins against United Township were Mauricio Garcia (126 pounds), Noah Garcia (132), Drake Church (138), Isaiah Figueroa (145), Michael Jackley (152) and Moises Lopez (195).

Adan Ramirez (285) won his bout against Marian, which gave up eight forfeits.

Rockets take two: Rock Falls rolled to a pair of opening-season wins in Amboy, 72-5 over the host Clippers and 64-17 against West Carroll.

Marcus Mendoza (126), Reiley Dowd (132), Lonnie Gribbons (170), Brody Mulvaney (182), Noah Bellini (195) and Browdie Benti (220) had wins for the Rockets against Amboy. Christopher Morris (285) won for Amboy.

Iziah James (126), Devon Parker (145), Butch Elder (152), Cade Adams (160) and Benti (195) won for Rock Falls against West Carroll. Briar Neville (106), Trapper Hartman (113) and Ethan Doty (120) won for the Thunder.
