AMBOY – Dollar General is coming to the city after nearly a decade of negotiations.
Construction on the store is slated to begin in the next couple weeks off of U.S. Route 52 north of Subway, and it should be open around mid-January, Mayor John Schamberger said Wednesday.
“It all finally came together and worked out, and it will be a nice addition to town,” he said.
The 9,100-square foot building will be on two recently purchased commercial lots.
The city approved spending about $8,300 to build water and sewer lines out to the site in May, and the developer will construct the access road and a detention pond.
“This will bring new business to Amboy, and it’s is a big deal when you live in a small town,” he said.
Bringing the chain to Amboy became a larger priority in late 2015 when its only grocery store, Beggs’ Certified Foods, closed down after about 6 decades in the community.
That gap was filled about a year ago with the opening of Amboy Food & Liquor, 242 E. Main St., and Dollar General adds to the shopping opportunities and business growth the city strives for, Schamberger said.
“We’re really a well-oiled machine that’s running right now.”
