Duchesses roll over Tigers

Byron bests Sterling in pool; Clippers first at Erie

The Dixon volleyball team went on the road and beat Byron 25-13, 25-18 in a Big Northern Conference match on Tuesday.

The Duchesses got 11 kills from Brenna Melvin and 17 assists from Maddy Melvin.

Juliana Rotella had four kills and three aces. Emma Carlson had 12 digs.

Oregon def. Rockford Christian 25-16, 25-22: The Hawks picked up a road win in Big Northern Conference action against the Royal Lions.

Gylian Finch paced the offense with 18 kills. She also had nine digs, an ace and a block. Bailey Nelson added four kills and a block.

Jasmine Herbst had 23 assists, five digs and a block. Libero Aleah Wight recorded a team-high 17 digs.

Newman def. Prophetstown: 25-15, 25-21: The Comets picked up a road win in TRAC East play over the Prophets.

Aidan Brown slammed 12 kills, and Madison Craft passed out 15 assists. Savannah Skinner had 13 digs and 11 service points, and Delaney Hinrichs had 11 digs and seven service points.

Hannah McKinney dished out 12 assists for Prophetstown. Dena Johnson had six kills, a block and an ace. Brooke Bennett was second on the team with four kills. 

Taylor Swanson had 12 digs, while Jessica Woodworth had eight digs for the Prophets. Jasmine VanHorn had a pair of aces.

Kewanee def. Bureau Valley 25-23, 19-25, 25-22: Saige Barnett’s stat-sheet stuffing of seven kills, five blocks, two aces and a dig wasn’t enough, as the Storm fell on the road to the Boilers in a TRAC East matchup.

Ellen Johnson played strong at the net with six blocks and three kills. Cassidy Olds had four kills, three blocks, two aces and a dig. 

Marissa Endress recorded 11 service points. Nicole Wirth passed out 15 assists.

Riverdale def. Morrison 25-14, 25-16: The Fillies couldn’t pick up a TRAC West win at home against the Rams.

Emily Szabo notched six digs and three kills. Grace Steines had three kills and three digs. Madison Steines had a team-high 10 digs.

Ally Noble had four assists and four digs, while MacKenzie Petkus had four assists and three digs.

Orion def. Erie 25-14, 25-10: The Cardinals were swept by the Chargers in a TRAC West road contest.

Jenna Saad had six assists, four digs, two kills and an ace. Jasmine Nickerson recorded five digs. Sophia Sullivan and Skylar Steimle had two kills apiece.

River Ridge def. Eastland 25-22, 21-25, 26-24: The Cougars fell in three sets in Lanark.

Katie Krogman had 20 kills and 19 digs in the losing effort. Gabby Snyder had 26 digs. Jordan Miller had 11 digs. Erin Henze and Erica Dambman each had 22 assists. Sage Walrath had nine kills, with Mac Byer adding six more.

Faith Christian def. Fulton Unity in four sets: The Falcons lost the first set, then rallied to take the next three.

Michael Schuler had 27 kills, eight digs, a block and three aces for Faith Christian. Naomi Barrett had seven kills, eight digs and a block. Shauni Warner had six kills and five digs. Meghan Van Buren had 33 assists and three aces.


Byron 96, Sterling 87: The Tigers swept the three relays in a win over the Warriors in Byron.

Leah Drengenberg won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:27.40, and the 200 freestyle in 2:02.38.

Sterling got a pair of wins from Kerry Mullen, who took the 50 freestyle in 25.74 seconds, and the 100 butterfly in 1:02.41.


Rockford Lutheran 3, Dixon 2: The Duchesses swept through the two singles matches without dropping a game, but fell in all three doubles matches.

Alane Bratt and Riley Bally both won 6-0, 6-0. Adela Bajramoska and Paige Colby dropped a tough match at No. 2 doubles, winning the first set 7-5 and dropping the next two by scores of 6-3 and 10-4.

Cross country

Clippers rule at Erie: Margaret Vaessen led a parade of teammates across the finish line as Amboy-LaMoille won the Panther Invitational at Lake Erie Country Club.

The Clippers finished with 28 points, well ahead of second-place Erie-Prophetstown, which had 71. Amboy-LaMoille has now won four of the last five Panther Invites, and three in a row.

Vaessen (21:08) edged teammate Kaitlyn Ortgiesen (21:15) for the top individual spot. Kelynn Boyle was fifth in 21:52, while Cassidy Corcoran was sixth in 22:03.

Newman was fourth in a six-team field with 97 points. The top Comet was Natalie Amezola, 14th in 23:17.

Morrison’s Claire Coons was eighth in 22:27. while Eastland’s Mara Schmieder was ninth in 22:29.

College volleyball

Sauk Valley def. Illinois Valley 25-16, 25-12, 25-10: The Skyhawks (19-3, 6-0 Arrowhead) kept rolling by blasting the Eagles in straight sets at home.

Bailey O’Brien led the way with 13 kills and 11 digs. Sommer Rhea recorded nine kills and nine digs. Hannah Peterson notched eight kills.

Kacey Koch passed out 17 assists and had eight digs, while Paige Connor had 15 assists.

College tennis

Waubonsee 6, Sauk Valley 2: Nadia Trujillo and Grace Ely won singles matches for the Skyhawks in a loss to Waubonsee at Sugar Grove.
